Mangalagiri

About

When you think of Lakshmi Narasimha Swami Temples in Andhra Pradesh, three well-known shrines- Ahobilam, Simhachalam and Mangalagiri strikes your mind. While Ahobilam enshrines nine forms of Lord Narasimha Simhachalam has the Varaha (boar) form of Lord Narasimha, Mangalagiri enshrines three forms of Lord Narasimha- Panakala Narasimha Swami, Lakshmi Narasimha Swami and Gandala Narasimha Swami.

The name “Mangalagiri” actually means "auspicious hill". These hills appear in the shape of an elephant when seen from any direction. Mangalagiri is beautiful town situated in Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh. This abode of Lord Narasimha Swami falls on the Guntur-Vijayawada Road. The two temple of Lord Narasimha, one at the foot of Mangalagiri hills dedicated to Lakshmi Narasimha Swami and the other on Mangalagiri hills dedicated to Panakala Narasimha Swami are the focal attractions of Mangalagiri town. The Gandala Narasimha Swami temple is also on the same hill at a bit higher altitude.

History
Mangalagiri, the auspicious hill is said to be one of the eight prominent places in India where Lord Vishnu manifested Himself. Sri Rangam, Srimushnam, Naimisam, Pushkaram, Salagamadri, Thothadri, Narayanasramam and Venkatadri are the eight places, Thothadri being the present Mangalagiri.

It is believed that Mangalagiri finds its existence from the time of origin of Universe. In Krithayugam (the first of the four Yugas), Mangalagiri was called as ‘Thothadri’. In Threthayugam it was called as ‘Sthuthadri’, in Dwaparayugam as ‘Mukthyadri’ and in Kaliyugam (the last of the four Yugas) as ‘Mangalagiri’. From the time of its existence, Mangalagiri has been offering salvation for many sinners. In the first Yuga when there were very few sinners, they were ordered by Yamadharmaraja (Lord of Hell) to perform penance in Mangalagiri to ward off their sins. In Threthayuga, the sinners were ordered by Lord Indra to perform penance at Mangalagiri to attain salvation from their sins.

The existence of the Mangalagiri Hills has an interesting tale behind it. There lived a king by name Pariyatra who had a son Hrasva Srungi who had a disfigured physique. After visiting many holy places Hrasva finally reached Mangalagiri and stayed there for three years. He spent his time performing penance in the name of Lord Vishnu as advised by all the Gods. When his father, king Pariyatra, came to take him back to his kingdom, Hrasva turned into an elephant in order to escape his father’s eyes. Pleased with his dedication, Lord Narasimha appeared to him and blessed him by descending on him (as Hrasva turned into a hill).

There is another legend which says that in Thretayugam, Lord Rama could not get liberation from His deeds in spite of strict observance of the dharma and was advised to visit this temple to attain mukthi (Salvation). It is also believed that Lord Rama, while departing for Vaikuntam, advised Anjaneya to stay at Mangalagiri. Anjaneya took his adobe at Mangalagiri as Kshetra Paalaka. The place thus also came to be known as Mukthyadri the hill that grant Mukthi (salvation)

History of Mangalagiri has it that it was under the control of Golkonda Nawabs for a longer period. It was plundered by Hyder Ali in 1780 but he could not conquer it. In the year 1816, a gang of robbers called ‘Pindarics’ again looted Mangalagiri. During the rule of Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu, who ruled the place from Amaravathi, Mangalagiri recovered to a larger extent. There is a big tank in the centre of the city which dried up in 1882. As many as 9,840 guns and 44 bullets which might have belonged to Pindaric gang of robbers were found after they looted this place.

A stone inscription of the kings of Vijayanagar relate to the conquest of Rayalu over Kondapalle, that Siddiraju Thimmarajayya Devara granted a total of 200 kunchams (10 Kunchams make one acre) land in 28 villages of which Mangalagiri was one and a gift of 40 Kunchams by Chinna Thirumalayya to Ramanujakutam.

Panakala Narasimha Swami Temple
About:
“Panaka” or “Paanakam” (in Tamil) means a solution of jaggery and water. Lord Narasimha Swami in Mangalagiri is called as Panakala Narasimha Swami as Pankam is the main Prasadam (offering) to the God. Panakala Narasimha Swami resides on Mangalagiri Hill and the idol of the Lord in this temple is said to be “Swayambhu” (self-existing).

A flight of stairs lead you to the small temple on the hill. While climbing the stairs, you can see a stone inscription by Sri Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagar Empire towards you right hand side and a temple of Sri Venkateshwara Swami in the midway. A little further up, you can see the foot prints of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (a monk and a social reformer of Eastern India in 16th century).

Once you enter inside the Panakala Narasimha temple, the energy present there rejuvenates your tiring climb. The temple is not much given to fine sculptures or architecture. A tall ‘Dwajasthambam’ (erected in the year 1955) is found in front of the temple. Unlike in many temples, you cannot find an idol of the Lord except a wide mouth (of the Lord) opening which is about 15cms in height. This is covered with a metal face of the God to give the devotees a clear picture of the Lord.

One of the amazing things to notice in Panakala Narasimha Swami temple is that when the “archakas” (or the priests) offer ‘Panakam’ (jaggery water) with a conch to the Lord, a gargling sound is clearly audible. The voice rises to a high pitch and then lessens towards the end of the offering. Interesting things to note are, only half the quantity of Panakam offered to God goes inside the mouth while the remaining spills out and not even a single ant can be traced though a large quantity of jaggery water is offered.

While the intake of Panakam by the Lord is looked up as a divine phenomenon by some people, some atheists believe that there is a scientific reason behind the intake of jaggery water. It is said that the hill was once a volcanic hill and sugar or jaggery water neutralizes the sulphur compounds present in the volcano, thus preventing the volcanic eruption. Whatever be the reason, the sanctity and divinity present in the temple, makes every devotee visit Mangalagiri again and again.

Sri Lakshmi Devi Temple: Behind the main temple, there is a temple of Sri Lakshmi Devi, the consort of Lord Narasimha. Here, to the west of the temple, you can find tunnel which is said to end at Undavalli on the banks of River Krishna. It was believed that sages used to pass through this tunnel to have bath in River Krishna.

Gandalayam: On a small hillock behind the Panakala Narasimha Swami temple there is a small shrine of Lord Narasimha where He is called as Gandala Narasimha Swami. There is no particular deity inside the temple except a provision to light a lamp. It is believed that this lamp was visible from many villages in good old days. People who suffer from miseries come here and light the lamp with cow ghee which is believed to ward off all their troubles.

History:
The existence of the Lord as ‘Panakala Narasimha Swami’ has an interesting tale behind it. The legend says that Namuchi, a Raakshasa (demon), after great penance, obtained a boon from Brahma that he should not be killed by any thing that is either wet or dry. After the demon was granted the boon, he began to harass Indra and other Devathas. Lord Indra, with the help of Lord Vishnu, commenced destroying the army of Raakshasa Namuchi who hid in a cave in Sukshmaakaaram giving up his sthulaakaaram (Physical manifestation). Indra dipped Sudarshana Chakra (the disc weapon of Lord Vishnu) in the ocean and sent it into the cave. Lord Vishnu manifesting Himself at the centre of the disc killed the demon with fire of His exhalation. He thus got the name of Sudarsana Narasimha.

The blood that flowed from the body of the demon seemed to have formed into a pool at the foot of the hill. The Devathas themselves were unable to withstand the fire of the anger of the Lord Vishnu and they prayed for Him to calm down. In kruthayugam, the Lord took ‘Amrutam’ (nectar) and cooled down. The Lord said that he would be satisfied with milk in Dwaparayugam, with ghee in Threthayugam and with paanakam (Jaggery water) in Kaliyugam. Hence the Lord in Kaliyugam is called as Paanakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swami.

In Krithayuga, Vaikhanasa Maharshi worshipped Lord Narasimha and whose idol is worshipped in the temple (up hill) even today.

Local Info:
It is believed that from afternoon Gods and Sages worship the Lord. So, the temple closes in the afternoon by 3:00 pm.

Sri Panakala Narasimha Swami Brahmothsavam is a very important annual festival held in this temple. It is believed that this celebration was inaugurated by Dharmaraja at the behest of Lord Krishna. Pradyumna, the son of Lord Krishna, requested his father to celebrate his birthday annually for a sapthaham (seven days) from Phalguna Suddha Sapthami. Lord Krishna entrusted this work to Dharmaraja, the eldest of the Pandavas who was the successor to the throne at Hasthinapura. At present the festival is celebrated for 11 days commencing from Phalguna sudda shasti that falls between February and March.

Srirama Navami, Hanumat Jayanthi, Narasimha Jayanthi, and Vaikuntha Ekadasi are celebrated here on a large scale.

Lakshmi Narasimha Swami Temple
About:
At the foot of the Mangalagiri hills, there is another prominent temple dedicated to Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swami. The very sight of the beautiful temple with lofty gopuram that can be seen from a far distance is the focal point of this temple. “Thoorpu Gali Gopuram” (temple tower on Eastern side), as it is called, is a eleven storied gopuram (tower) of which three storeys were constructed during the time of Vijayanagara Empire and the other eight were constructed by one Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu (a well-known ruler who ruled this place from Amaravati) about 200 years back. It took about two years (from 1807-1809) to complete the construct of the remaining eight storeys.

This gopuram is one of its kinds with a height of 153 feet and width of 49 feet, wider at the bottom and narrower at its peak. It’s really amazing and rare to find a magnificent lofty tower this width and height. It is said that after the construction of this gopuram, it was leaning towards one direction. An architect from Kanchipuram suggested digging a tank opposite to the tower, after which the tower became straight. It goes without saying, that ancient gener had brilliant skills, craftsmanship and whale of knowledge about the architecture. There is another Gopuram, the ‘Uttara Gali Gopuram’ (tower on the north), constructed by one Mandapati Venkateshwara Rao, a Zamindar (landlord) of Ranagapuram.

The idol in this temple is in the form of ‘man-lion’ incarnation of Lord Vishnu with His consort Lakshmi Devi to His left. One of the significant features of this temple is the garland of the Lord that is made of 108 “Saligramam”. A special conch called “Dakshanavrutha Sankham”, believed to be the one used by Lord Krishna, is still used in this temple during daily rituals. This conch was gifted to the temple by the Tanjore king Maharaja Sarfoji.

As you explore the temple, to its north, you can see the temple of Sri Rajalakshmi and to the south, there is a temple of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana. To the west of the main temple, there is a ‘Vahanashala’ (parking place for vehicles used during special rituals) where you can see a golden ‘Garuda Vahanam’, a silver ‘Hanumantha Vahanam’ and ‘Ponna Vahanam’. There is an ancient ‘Ratham’ belonging to the temple with ornamental wood carvings showing scenes from Mahabharata, Ramayana and Bhagvad Gita.

History:
The temple of Lakshmi Narasimha Swami at the foot of the hills has its origin from the time of Mahabharata. It is said that Yudhishtira, the eldest of Pandavas, consecrated the idol of Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swami, the main deity of the temple.

Chronicles has it that Thimmaraju Devaraju, a chieftain of Vijayanagara Empire, developed this temple to a large extent by constructing the ‘Prakaras’ (compound Wall), Mandapas, Gopurams, five images of Lord Bhairava, a festival chariot, ten varieties of court for annual festivals, flower gardens, lakes and tanks. He even installed the ‘Utsava Vigrahas’ (idols used during processions) in this temple.

There goes a legend behind the making of Utsava Vigrahas. It is said that a reputed goldsmith was ordered to make the Utsava Murthis of the lord. When he was making them, using the ‘Panchalohas’ (five metals), the idols did not turn out well. This continued everyday and he had great trouble in making them. One day he prayed the Lord before starting his work and as an answer to his prayer, a voice asked him to sacrifice a human being. Just that moment his son came to him for water as he was very thirsty. Without a second thought, the goldsmith threw his son in the burning molten mixture of the five metals. It was then that the amalgam shaped into beautiful idols of the Lord. The goldsmith cried in agony of losing his beloved son who came to ask him water. To his astonishment, the son of the goldsmith suddenly jumped out of the fire and stood before his father. Thus his devotion and dedication towards his work and the Lord was tested.
